Obituary

Marlene Ann Mangum, 79, a longtime resident of the Verboort community passed away Sunday morning, July 31, 2016 at her home.

Marlene was born on the family farm in Forest Grove, OR She was the oldest of three daughters born to Louis and Ethel (Heesacker) Spiering. She lived on the family farm off Reiing Rd in Roy all of her life. She attended St Francis of Assisi Catholic Grade school and graduated from Banks High School with the Class of 1954. She later attended Shaw Business school in Portland.

She met her future husband, W. Verl through a mutual friend. Verl was enlisted and they courted for a year and a half through weekly letters and saw each other only while he was on leave. 20 dates later they were married on June 1, 1957 in Roy, OR. Following their marriage they lived where Verl's enlistment assignment in Las Vegas. Upon his discharge they moved to Verboort were they have lived since.

Marlene was a devoted and loving mother to her four children; Verla, Wendy, Jill and Randy. She also worked outside the home. First in the fields with the children picking berries and beans, then babysitting, and later at Times Litho as a typist. Once her youngest was out of school Marlene started as a clerk for the Washington County Parole and Probation Board a job she had for over 20 years until retirement..

She enjoyed gardening, canning and baking. She was never idle and was crafting, sewing crocheting, knitting, and ceramics. She made over 700 pot holders many years for the parish dinner. Verl and Marlene both liked to visit the natural wonders in Oregon and surrounding states which included waterfalls, caves, hot springs, beaches and mountains. She played the piano and accordion.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law; Alan Greene

She is survived her loving husband; Verl, four children and their spouses; Verla and Richard Kelly of Roy, Wendy and Richard Bumgardener of Vancouver, WA, Jill and Perry Banister of Hillsboro, Randy and Linda Mangum of Canby, two sisters and a brother-in-law; Lois and Frank Gifford of Portland, Karen Greene of Cornelius, five grandchildren; Kimberlea, Korey, Joshua, Jennifer and Elysia, and three great grandchildren; Ally, Lacy and Triniti.

The family suggest donations to the Visitation Capital Campaign for School Replacement.
