Obituary

IDA MARIAN HERMENS was born December 11, 1908 in Verboort, Oregon, the daughter of William and Wilhemina (Kersten) Smith. She attended and graduated from the Greenville School and later attended St. Mary's of the Valley Catholic School in Beaverton. After her schooling she worked as a housekeeper for several local families. She was united in marriage to Ernest Anthony "Bub" Hermens on August 23, 1933 in the Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort. Following their marriage they made their home in Verboort, until 1962 when they moved to the Banks community. Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Bub, on February 29, 1996 at Hillsboro, Oregon, after celebrating over sixty-two years of marriage. She continued residing in Banks until 1999 when she moved to Forest Grove, to reside with her daughter and son-in-law, Louann and Sid Bone. While living in the Banks community, Ida owned and operated the Banks Cafe for over three years. After selling the Cafe, she worked for the Copeland Lumber Company in Forest Grove for seven years, retiring in 1972. Ida then worked for the City of Banks Water Department as a bookkeeper for twenty years, retiring in September of 1992. She was a longtime active member of the St. Francis of Asssi Catholic Church in Roy, and a member of the National Order of Catholic Foresters for over fifty-five years. Among her special interests she enjoyed cooking and contesting. Ida prepared and assisted in over 104 wedding dinners and won many numerous prizes in her contesting hobby, including a car, electric range, electric sewing machine and numerous other prizes. Ida was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Joseph Hermens in 1938; four sisters, Agnes Vanderzanden, Esther Peterson, Sister Clotildia Smith, S.S.M.O. and Marie Abts; a grandson, Doug Vandecoevering in 1974; a great-granddaughter, Alison LaBonte in 1995. Ida died November 7, 2000 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Maxine Hermens, of LaGrande; her three daughters and sons-in-law, Leanne and Louie LaBonte and Louanne and Sid Bone, all of Forest Grove; and Louine and Richard Warren, of Banks; her three brothers and a sister-in-law, Norman Smith, of Banks; Ervin and Leona Smith, of Forest Grove; and Joseph Smith, of Beaverton. twelve grandchildren, ten greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
