Obituary

Pauline (Sohler) Vandehey, 87, passed away quietly at home on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, surrounded by her children who love and adore her.

Pauline was born on July 8, 1929 in Verboort. She was the oldest of eight children born to William and Barbara (Hillecke)Sohler. At age 4, the family moved to a farm located in Bethany where she was raised. When she was 15, her family moved back to Verboort and bought the Sohler family farm. She attended Bethany Grade School and graduated from St Mary's of the Valley High School in Beaverton with the Class of 1947.

She met her future husband, Adrian "Johnny" Vandehey at a dance in the Verboort Foresters’ Hall. They soon began dating and they were married on April 20, 1948 in Verboort at Visitation Catholic Church. Following their wedding, they made their home in Verboort for 5 years until they purchased 80 acres adjacent to the Vandehey family farm located near Roy where they lived for 48 years. For the past 15 years, they have resided in Hillsboro. They were married for 68 years.

Pauline was first and foremost a loving and devoted mother to her 10 children. She was a farmer's wife and her jobs ranged from tractor driver and field boss to household chores. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, and traveling. She followed Mariners baseball and listened to country western music. She devoted many hours to St. Francis of Assisi parish; she volunteered for the altar society, donated her homemade crafts to the annual holiday bazaar, and was chairwoman of the annual parish dinner.

Before marriage, she worked at the Forest Grove Hospital as a nurse's aide. This experience gave her a life long interest in nursing. Along with doctoring all of her children over the years, she assisted in caring for Betty Vandehey for several years during her battle with MS. She was very proud that several of her grand-daughters chose nursing as their careers.

She is preceded in death by her parents and three siblings: Marie Vandehey, Robert Sohler and Edward Sohler.

She is survived by her loving husband, Adrian, her ten children and their spouses: Kathleen Steiert of Beaverton, Kenneth and Joanne Vandehey of Cornelius, Delores Lazott of Salem, Doug Vandehey of Forest Grove, Joan and Ron Baune of Salem, Jim Vandehey of Newport, Allen Vandehey of Portland, Sharon Giesbers of Forest Grove, Carolyn and Frank Kraaz of Yamhill, Terri and Peter Arcidiacano of Durham, NC, four siblings and a sister-in-law: Madeline Turner of Hillsboro, Willis Sohler of Gaston, Ron and Lynn Sohler of North Plains, Sister Barbara Rose Sohler of Beaverton, 22 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

The family suggests donations in Pauline's name to The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.
