Bernice E. Kindel, age 75 of Verboort died July 13, 2010, at Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Bernice was born April 9, 1935, in Dayton, Oregon to Fred and Marie (Herb) Bunker, the third of five children. The family moved to the Greenville area in 1946 amidst the smoke of the last Tillamook burn. She attended St. Francis of Assisi grade school in Roy and graduated from Banks High School in 1953.
Bernice worked as a bookkeeper for C.C. Ruth and Company from 1953 to 1957 where she met her future husband, William Kindel. They were married April 14, 1956, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Roy and moved to the Kindel family place in Verboort where she lived the rest of her life. When William and his brothers started their own business, Sunrise Seed, in 1958, her bookkeeping experience was once again called into action.
After almost ten years of marriage Bernice and William adopted their daughter, Jane, in 1965. That worked out so well, they adopted their daughter Julie in 1967. Their son Michael surprised everyone with his arrival in 1968. During Michael's high school years his closest friends, Mary Darby and Steven Stanbrough, lived with the family and she considered them her children also. Her kindness, warmth, energy, and consistently cheerful demeanor were traits her children and grandchildren will always hold as an example of how to live a good life.
Bernice tirelessly served her community as a member of Visitation Catholic Church. She volunteered as a room mother and librarian at Visitation School, as a member of the Visitation Altar Society and as Coordinator of the Visitation Parish Center from 1990 to 2010. There was no special event in Verboort that Bernice did not have a hand in. When asked how long she would continue to serve as Parish Center Coordinator she replied, “Probably until about a week after my funeral.”
Bernice was the epitome of a dedicated Catholic wife and mother. Her family was everything to her, and her thoughtful dedication made every holiday and birthday golden. Bernice loved to travel, grow roses, garden, bakes cookies with her grandchildren, and attend Little League games. She was well-known for her ability to outwork everyone else in the family, and you could always count on her to be there when there was a big job that needed to get done. In the little leisure time, she allowed herself she enjoyed genealogy, gardening, travel and caring for people were also important to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband William in 1998.

Katherine Evelyn (Raba) Kindel, 92, a former resident of the Verboort community, late of Selby, South Dakota, died Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center in Selby, South Dakota. KATHERINE E. (RABA) KINDEL was born on May 20, 1922 in Selby, South Dakota, the daughter of Andrew and Theresa Raba. She attended grade school at West Spring Valley School. She did housework and worked as a florist in Chicago for a short time. She spent fifteen months at a religious community, Servants of Mary, in Wisconsin. She met her husband, Kenneth Julius Kindel through a pen pal service and they were married on October 3, 1950 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Selby, South Dakota. After a honeymoon trip from South Dakota back to Oregon, they made their home on the Kindel family farm in Verboort. She lost her husband in 1964 and in 1965 moved with her nine children back to Selby, South Dakota. There they lived with her sister's family on the farm until she bought a home in Selby. She is a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Altar Society. Katherine taught 1st grade CCD and kept the church sparkling for many years. She also worked at the Hilltop Motel for a number of years. In 2009, she moved into the Good Samaritan Center where she had resided since. Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her daughter, Rose Mary; her parents, Andrew and Theresa Raba; her six bothers and two sisters. Survivors include her nine children and their spouses, Alicia and Donald Herinckx, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Andrew and Candace Kindel, of Eureka, Montana; Marvin and Nancy Kindel, of Selby, South Dakota; Marianne and Clifford Vandervelden, of North Plains, Oregon; Therese and Daniel Schmidt, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Timothy and Jan Kindel, of Hosmer, South Dakota; Jerome and Dixie Kindel, of Java, South Dakota; June and Gregory Kolb, of Aloha, Oregon and Renita and Scott Sauer, of Aberdeen South Dakota ; her sister, Irene Kosters, of Mobridge, South Dakota and her sister-in-law, Verna Raba, of Rapid City, South Dakota. Also surviving are twenty-eight grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests donations to the Good Samaritan Center, P.O. Box 299, Selby, South Dakota, 57572 or to St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 7209 5th Avenue (PO Box 231), Selby, South Dakota, 57472, in her memory.

Laura Ann Kindel was born in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of Lawrence and Clara (Meeuwsen) Kindel. Her younger years were spent as a child in Verboort, Oregon, before moving with her family in 1974 to Yamhill County, where she attended school and graduated from Yamhill-Carlton High School in 1986.\r

Laurie was a loving mom, grandma, daughter, sister and friend who left us far too soon.\r

Her enthusiasm was contagious to both those who met her for the first time and those who had known her for years.\r

Laurie touched lives with her sunny disposition, loving heart and great sense of humor. She loved music and the beach and had a number of talents; however, her family was the most important thing in her life. Laurie’s family meant everything to her, especially her kids and grandbabies.\r

She is survived by her children, Jennifer Sohler and Keven Sohler; grandchildren Kylee, Kynlee and Steven; mother, Clara, fiancé, D.J. Davenport; sisters, Jan Warrington and Angie Weidner; and brothers, Steve, Dave, Mark and Brian Kindel.\r

Laurie was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence, and brother, Kenny.\r

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Rock Point Church, 4301 N. College St., Newberg, Oregon.
