Obituary

Jane M. VanDyke, 85, a former longtime resident of the Verboort community, late of Hillsboro, died Sunday, June 14, 2020, at the Cornell Estates Retirement Community in Hillsboro.

A private family funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 19, 2020, at St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville, with Fr. Ben Tapia, of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Forest Grove, celebrant. Assisting will be Deacon Raul Rodriguez. A private family Rite of Christian Burial will follow at Visitation Cemetery in Verboort, with Fr. Michael Vuky, officiating.

Jane was born November 3, 1934, in Yamhill, Oregon, the daughter of the late Theodore “Ted” Bernards and Margaret “Maggie” (Hermens) Bernards. She was raised in the Yamhill community and attended St. James Catholic School in McMinnville. Jane continued her schooling at Yamhill-Carlton High School and was a graduate of the class of 1953.

She was united in marriage to Ervin VanDyke on November 11, 1953, in St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville. Following their marriage, they resided on the VanDyke family farm in Verboort for over forty years.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin on November 26, 1990, after celebrating over thirty-seven years of marriage together. She continued living on the family farm until 1999, when she moved to the Hillsboro community. In August 2015, Jane moved to the Cornell Estates Retirement Community, where she had resided since.

Jane was a homemaker while her children were young. Later, she worked as an elections clerk for Washington County for five years. Jane also worked as a bank teller for First Interstate Bank in Forest Grove for eighteen years, until the age of sixty, when she retired.

Jane was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. After moving to the Verboort community, she was an active member of Visitation Parish. She was a member of the Altar Society, treasurer of the Visitation Parish Cemetery Committee, trained mass servers and served as a eucharistic minister.

She was active in the community, volunteering with the Forest Grove Chamber of Commerce as well as serving as the volunteer travel coordinator for the Hillsboro Senior Center.

Among her special interests, Jane enjoyed traveling, camping, clam digging, crocheting, baking and bowling. In her later years, Jane enjoyed taking care of her flowers and hummingbirds.

Jane was also preceded in death by her parents, Ted and Maggie Bernards, her two sisters, Martha Juenemann and Theresa Anderson, and her six brothers, Robert, Don, Hubert, Ted, Larry and Norman Bernards.

Survivors include her son, Kevin VanDyke, of Portland, Oregon and her three daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Herb VanderZanden, of Verboort Oregon; Beverly and Dave Schalk, of Wilsonville, Oregon and Jan and Steve Foltz, of Tigard, Oregon and her twin brother, John Bernards, of Hillsboro, Oregon.

Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren and their spouses, Breeann and Jeff Strassel, of Cornelius Oregon; Aimee Nemeyer, of Hillsboro, Oregon; Cayla and Ryan Swift, currently serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed in San Diego, California; Darcie VanDyke, of Klamath Falls, Oregon; Jenny and Kerry Meeuwsen, of Aloha, Oregon; Janel and Scott Campbell, of Scappoose,Oregon; Jill and Matthew Bilka, of Dundee, Oregon; Laura and Jake Gano, of West Linn, Oregon; Katelyn and Nick Carlson, of Portland, Oregon; Ryan Schalk, of Portland, Oregon; Elise Schalk, of Edinburgh, Scotland; Krista and Austin Hocker, of Eugene, Oregon and Megan Foltz, of Portland, Oregon; fourteen great-grandchildren and more than eighty nieces and nephews.
