Robert James Purdy, Sr. was born March 8, 1940, in Petaluma, California, the only child of the late Thomas James Purdy and Amelia (Tate) Purdy. He was raised and received his education in Petaluma, California. He was a Vietnam Veteran, having joined the United States Navy on March 13, 1963, in Petaluma, California. Bob served for two years until receiving his discharge on March 19, 1965, at the Long Beach Naval Station in Long Beach, California at the rank of E-4. He had received the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Bob was united in marriage to Lynne Anne Mortimer on December 21, 1962, in the St. Vincent Catholic Church in Petaluma, California. They celebrated their 54th Wedding Anniversary this past December. Immediately following their marriage, they resided in Petaluma, California for six years, until 1968 when they moved to Oregon, settling happily in the Forest Grove community for the last 50 years. Recently, they moved to the Cornelius community, where they have resided since. In Bob's early years, he worked as a carpenter for several builders in California and parts of Oregon. Bob later worked in the dairy farming industry as a herdsman for the Scott and Sheelar Farms in Forest Grove. He then drove truck for Stewart Stiles (Nortran) in Cornelius for nineteen years until he retired at the age of sixty-two years old. Bob then turned in his semi-truck keys in for a set of RV keys and with his wife spent the next 6 years touring the continental United States. He was happy to settle back down permanently in Forest Grove and drive as a bus driver for Mid-Columbia Bus Company for the Forest Grove School District until 2 years ago. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Amelia Purdy and his two daughters, Kathleen Lynne Purdy and Eileen Anne Purdy. Survivors include his wife, Lynne Mortimer Purdy, of the family home in Forest Grove, Oregon; his three children and their spouses, Cristine Amelia “Tina” Purdy and Michael Kindel, of Verboort, Oregon; Robert James "Jim” Purdy and Tsahai Anderson, of Beaverton, Oregon and Amy C. and Kerry Cakebread, of Portland, Oregon. 1 Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Devan Robert Cakebread; Abigail Rose Cakebread; Colleen Amelia Cakebread; Morgan Michael Kindel and Illessa Marylin Hall-Purdy and his beloved cousin, Dorothy Petersen, of Petaluma, California and extended family in Ireland. -
