Obituary

CLEMENT DANIEL "CLEM" VANDERZANDEN was born March 28, 1914 on the family farm just outside of Verboort, Oregon, the son of the late Isadore and Bernardina (Heesacker) Vanderzanden. He was the sixth of eight children. He was raised and received his education in the Verboort community, having graduated from the Verboort High School.
On November 23, 1939, he was united in marriage to Julia Van Dyke at Verboort, Oregon. They celebrated their 53rd Wedding Anniversary this past November. Following their marriage they have made their home in the Verboort community.
From 1938 to 1941, Clem co-owned and operated a tavern in Forest Grove. During World War II, he worked in the shipyards in Portland. He also worked for Farmer's Feed, a sawmill and Guyton's Dairy until 1960 when he went to work for Tektronix in Beaverton. He worked for Tektronix as a warehouseman for twenty years until he retired on April 3, 1980 at the age of sixty-six.
He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, having attended the Visitation Parish. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters as well as the AARP.
Among his special interests he enjoyed camping, clamming, golfing and watching baseball games.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Alfred, Andrew, Dominic and Paul; and two sisters, Theresa and Theodora.
Mr. Vanderzanden died Friday morning, April 30, 1993 at the St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center in Portland following an extended illness.
He is survived by his wife, Julia, of the family home in Verboort; a son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Shirley Vanderzanden of LaGrande, Oregon; two daughters and a son-inlaw, Judy and Don Walter of North Plains, Oregon; and Jane Raffety of Hillsboro, Oregon; and a brother, Rod Vanderzanden of Forest Grove, Oregon.
Also surviving are six grandchildren and their spouses, Doug Piercy, Sheryl Raffety and Ryan Raffety all of Hillsboro, Oregon; JoAnne and Rick Robison and Jeri and Braden Lundy all of Salem, Oregon; and Mike Vanderzanden who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy stationed in Alameda, California; three great-grandchildren, Clinton and Kyle Robison and Robbie Lundy all of Salem, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
