Obituary

ERNIE KRIEGER was born May 4, 1917 in Verboort, Oregon, the son of John A. and Anna (Evers) Krieger. He was raised on the family farm and attended Verboort grade and high schools. After graduation he worked locally as a logger and a mechanic. He joined the Oregon National Guard in 1939 and was a member of the Sunset Division, which was mobilized into active army duty at the outbreak of WWII. Ernie served overseas from 1942 to 1945 in the South Pacific Theatre where he earned a Purple Heart. Ernie was united in marriage to Phyllis Rose Hulsman on September 18, 1945 in Cornelius, Oregon in a double wedding with his sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Ernie LaVoie. Ernie had lived on the same property for the past fifty-six years, with fifty-two of those years with his wife, Phyllis, before her passing in December of 1997. After returning from the Army, he owned and operated "Ernie's Tavern", which sat across from the Sunset Grove Golf Course on Highway 47 until 1970 when it was destroyed by fire. During that time, Ernie also worked for General Tire & Rubber Company in Portland until his retirement in 1981. Ernie was a member of Visitation Catholic Parish in Verboort. He was also a member of the Hillsboro Knights of Columbus, the Forest Grove Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. #2440, and the American Legion. Among his interests, he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, trapshooting, and playing cards. Ernie was an avid gardener who liked preserving foods, and growing grapes and berries for winemaking, which he shared with family and friends. Ernie was also preceded in death by his parents; an infant son and two infant daughters; four brothers, Francis, Vincent, Julius, and Ernest Krieger; two sisters, Loretta LaVoie and Marie Giesbers; and a grandson, Jason Barnes. Ernie died March 11, 2001 at his home in Verboort. He is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry and Janie Krieger of Gaston, Oregon; Randy Krieger of Cornelius, Oregon; and Bill Krieger of Verboort, Oregon; a daughter, Marlea Barnes of Lake Oswego, Oregon; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin and Ruth Krieger of Forest Grove, Oregon; and Norbert and Betty Krieger of Banks, Oregon; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. ************************** The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the American Cancer Society, 0330 SW Curry Street, Portland, Oregon 97201, in his memory.
