Obituary

Joanne Cecilia (Van Dyke) Scabery

Sept. 19, 1931 - Nov. 3, 2020

Joanne Scabery, our dearly loved Mom and Grandma, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020.

Joanne was born in Forest Grove, Ore., Sept. 19, 1931 to George and Ethel Van Dyke. She grew up on a farm outside of Forest Grove and had a great and adventurous childhood with her four brothers and young aunts and uncles.

After graduating from Verboort High School, Joanne went to secretarial school and then worked for Haney Truck Lines. She met Charlie Scabery at a local dance and they married July 25, 1959. After Charlie graduated from Pacific University, they settled in Portland, to start an optometry business and raise their two daughters, Carole and Linda.

Joanne was a homemaker and also helped keep the books for Portland Optical Company. She always had a prolific vegetable and flower garden. We will forever miss her blueberry bushes. She loved finding a great sale, and knew where to find the best prices on just about everything. Joanne was an active member of St. Therese Parish and St. Patrick's Altar Guild for as long as she could do so. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed her trips to Hawaii. She was close to her extended family in the Forest Grove area, getting together with her aunts and cousins monthly to play cards and share a potluck lunch. Her family meant everything to her, especially her beloved grandsons. She was dearly loved and will be missed by many.

Joanne is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Carole and Brad Hermanson, and Linda and Jared Germain; grandsons, Ian Hermanson and Charlie and Bodhi McCourt; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Carol Van Dyke, Gene and Kathy Van Dyke, David and Veronica Van Dyke; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie; and her brother, Wayne.

Her family would like thank everyone at RN Villa for the wonderful care, love and community they gave Joanne.

A funeral Mass will be held at 3 p.m., Nov. 12, 2020, at St. Therese Church in Portland. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, please contact Carole Hermanson at c.hermanson@comcast.net if you would like to attend. A small graveside service will be held Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, at Visitation Cemetery in Verboort.
