William
Hermens came to America by sail ship in 1857 when he was 27 years
old. He
worked as a sailor for his passage to New York. His daughter,
Constance,
often related to her son Joseph F. VanDyke, how her father would climb
up the
masts to take in the sails when the weather was stormy. He
arrived in De
Pere Wisconsin in 1857. He married Catherine Natalia
Muelemans at De Pere
in 1861 and they came west by the newly completed railroad to Portland,
Oregon
and settled near Verboort on Dec 26, 1883.
